Hazards Of Country Gardening

Woke up a couple mornings ago to the sound of my dog going nuts. I hollered at Lyn to see what was wrong. She hollered back that there was a cow in the front yard. I got up, got dressed and went down to assess the damage as we had just planted a bunch of new plants in what used to be the front yard.

I find not a cow but a bull in the big bed of Greg's Mist Flower, munching away. Seeing me he started toward the back. He turned around and came back to the bed of Lariopes and started eating them. When he walked between Lyn's car and the air conditioner, he knocked the corner of the air conditioner off, exposing all the wiring.

He started trying to drink the water that was dripping out of the air conditioner so I figured he was thirsty. I got two buckets of water and took him one. He drank it all and came to me to drink the other one. I led him to the back gate and set the bucket down out side the gate. He went through and I shut the gate and was rid of him.........I think.

  1. OMG! A similar thing happened to me years ago! The cow tromped through my front yard and came right up on my porch. She took a drink from my little garden pond, but didn't do any lasting damage. Fun times!

  2. Must be really tough trying to find deer- and cattle-resistant plants!

  3. It may not be a china shop, but your garden is probably not designed to withstand bull depredations. I'm glad he proved gentle enough for you to lure him out.

  4. And I thought deer were a nuisance. At least we don't have livestock wandering in our yard.

I'm glad you were able to save most of your plants at least. Yay for canine early warning systems!

  5. That is certainly not a good news to hear.

  6. And to whom does he belong? Next time when my MIL complains about the deer eating her garden, I'll tell her that at least they're not cows.

  7. never mind Bob. That salvia needed a good pruning so it will be at its best for the fall. I sure am glad you didn't holler for Lyn to go do something about it! A few years ago a herd of longhorns got into a nearby garden where they had just laid grass. They had a wonderful time. They do still graze nearby but we wondered how they had got across the ravine.

  9. Good grief! I'm sorry about your air conditioner. But I wish I'd seen you giving him water. What a life, huh?

At least in La. all we have to contend with in the garden are alligators!
